In vehicles with a conventional internal combustion engine, the air conditioning compressor is usually driven by a pulley and the V-belt, but this mechanism is not available in electric vehicles. Here the air conditioning compressor is driven by an electric motor that is integrated into the high-voltage network of the vehicle. Pierburg GmbH has developed an electric A / C compressor (eCC) that takes into account the supplier’s many years of experience in the field of mechatronic components.
The new device has a compact design so that it fits into the usual installation rooms and meets the regular voltage levels HV2 and HV3. The three modules – mechanical compressor unit, electric motor and power electronics – are modularly integrated.
During the development, special attention was paid to low weight and high operational efficiency. This ensures economical energy management with the limited electrical energy that is available from the high-voltage storage in the vehicle.
The design of the machine enables not only the classic operation of an air conditioning system when the outside temperature is warm, but also the operation of the heat pump when the outside temperature is low. By using a heat pump to heat the driver’s cab, the energy flow from the high-voltage storage system can be reduced as required, thereby increasing the range of the vehicle.
Another focus of development was the low noise level of the compressor, since its noises and vibrations are perceived as annoying by the driver and the occupants.
Pierburg also developed an electronically controlled expansion valve for the refrigerant circuit. The new valve is usually mounted on an evaporator or cooler and controls the flow of refrigerant. These heat exchangers are suitable for use in air conditioning systems, cooling battery sets or electrical drive components.
Thanks to its compact design, the valve developed by Pierburg can be fully integrated into heat exchangers. The refrigerant flow can be regulated as required with an electric actuator, increasing the overall efficiency of the system.
